Sedation Dentistry

Who This Is For

Sedation dentistry may be a good fit if you:

  • Feel nervous or panicked before appointments
  • Avoid the dentist altogether due to fear
  • Have a strong gag reflex
  • Struggle to sit through longer procedures
  • Feel self-conscious about your teeth
  • Have had a painful or negative dental experience in the past

What Anxious Patients Often Tell Us

Many of our patients say their biggest fears were:

  • “I thought I’d be judged.”
  • “I was worried it would hurt.”
  • “I didn’t know what was going to happen.”

What often surprises them is how different the experience feels when things are explained clearly, they’re not rushed, and they feel in control of the pace.

If any of that sounds familiar, you’re not the only one—and there are ways to make visits easier.

Your Sedation Options (Explained Simply)

We offer different levels of sedation depending on your comfort level and the type of treatment.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

  • Breathed through a small mask during treatment
  • Helps you feel calm and relaxed within minutes
  • You remain awake and aware
  • Wears off quickly; you can usually drive yourself home

Best for: mild to moderate anxiety or shorter visits

Oral Sedation

  • A prescription pill taken before your appointment
  • Helps you feel deeply relaxed, and time may feel like it passes quickly
  • You’ll still be conscious but less aware of the procedure
  • You’ll need someone to drive you to and from your visit

Best for: moderate to higher anxiety or longer procedures

IV Sedation

  • Administered and monitored throughout your procedure
  • You’ll be in a deeply relaxed, sleep-like state
  • Most patients remember little or nothing afterward
  • Requires a companion and some recovery time

Best for: severe anxiety or complex treatments

What to Expect (Step by Step)

At Aesthetic Oral Health, the process of sedation dentistry begins with a thorough consultation and assessment with Dr. T. During your appointment, our team ensures your comfort and safety throughout the procedure. Various levels of sedation are available, and Dr. T will recommend a course of action based on your specific needs. We prioritize your well-being during every step of sedation dental treatment.

1. Start With a Conversation

You don’t have to jump straight into treatment. Many anxious patients begin with a consultation, just talking through concerns and options.

2. We Plan Around Your Comfort

We’ll discuss your anxiety level, past experiences, and preferences to decide whether sedation makes sense, and which type.

3. Your Appointment

On the day of your visit:

  • We go at your pace
  • You can ask for breaks at any time
  • We explain each step before we begin

If you choose sedation, we’ll guide you through exactly what to expect beforehand.

4. After Your Visit

  • Nitrous oxide wears off quickly
  • Oral or IV sedation requires some recovery time
  • We’ll give you clear, simple aftercare instructions

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Yes—when provided appropriately, sedation dentistry is considered safe.
We:

  • Review your medical history carefully
  • Monitor you throughout your visit
  • Use sedation methods suited to your health and comfort level

If sedation isn’t a good fit for any reason, we’ll talk through alternative approaches.

Do I Have to Be Fully Sedated?

Not at all.

Some patients feel comfortable with just a calm, slower-paced visit and clear communication—no medication needed. Others prefer sedation for peace of mind. We’ll help you decide what feels right for you.

A Different Kind of First Step

If you’ve been avoiding the dentist, you don’t have to commit to treatment right away. You can start with a simple, no-pressure visit to meet the team, talk through concerns, and understand your options. No procedures required, just a starting point.
